Okay, so we now know the first three movies happened in the same year (according to Rarity in one of the clips of Legend of Everfree), and now the fourth one is in the summer directly after.
Which means there’s technically an EQG movie for every season (EQG 1 - Fall, RR - Winter, FG - Spring, LoE - Summer), meaning they live somewhere where it never snows and weather stays relatively the same year-round.
But what’s confused fans for a while now is the fact that Sunset won Princess of the fall formal three times before EQG 1. Wouldn’t that mean they graduated between the third and the fourth movie?
Well, normally, yeah, but in Ontario, Canada there used to be a fifth year of high school, Grade 13. Which makes sense if four years are already accounted for.
So they’re 17 going on 18 and about to enter their final year in the fall!
But here’s the catch.
Even at the most southern point of Ontario Canada, it snows in the winter (trust me, it’s where I live).
But there’s a way around this because this isn’t a parallel world to ours, it’s a parallel world to Equestria. And Equestria is the whole continent of North America.

See cities like New York and Vegas, but also Vancouver? And a frozen north up top and dry desserts to the south? It’s all one country.
And for this I’m saying the EQG world has the same geography, or similar.
All this to say in EQG, they’re somewhere in the more southern part of the country (maybe L.A. or Florida), where it doesn’t snow, but follow the same school system as Ontario (circa 1921-2003) because it’s all one country, hence five years of high school. Boom. Solved it.

Ah! You’re right! I totally forgot about that comic! Takes place after Rainbow Rocks, if I remember right.
Which means EQG 1 and Rainbow Rocks took place in the same semester, and Friendship Games sometime in the second semester after the snow melted.
How much snow there was and how long the season lasted is impossible to say, so placing where they live isn’t an exact science that way, but it looks like the obvious answer might just be the answer we’re looking for.
Whatever town Canterlot High is in and city Crystal Prep is in is where Ponyville and Canterlot are in Equestria.
The weather isn’t comparable since it’s controlled by the ponies themselves in Equestria, but that fact aside, it would make sense …
I wonder if this could mean they’re actually in Ontario, Canada.
The five years of high school, the warm summers, mild springs and falls, and snowy winters, the central location in the continent … It could add up.
It’s not a perfect match, since winters last at least three months here, and Ontario is more to the right than Ponyville is in Equestria, but it does hold up with the 5 years thing, which is the most logical explanation I can come up with for the timeline of the Equestria Girls movies.
What makes the most sense geographically is North Dakota– Ponyville is under Manehatten and Vanhoover (below the border), and smack dab in the middle of Equestria, and presumably, the EQG country.
Either way, they both have enough of the right conditions that if we wanted to say Equestria/the EQG country had all the same school system (run federally instead of by the state since there are no states or provinces), we still have our answers!
So, to recap with the corrections:
